According to a Landmark article for the Wheeling News Register of the 1980s this house was built by 1886 when John Elbert, a sheet iron worker lived there. The pattern on the cornice is called rickrack trim. The wrought iron window guards were not there in the 1980s. In 1972 the president of the Friends of Wheeling bought it to restore it and "to provide quality housing in an old home." Forty some years later it still seems to be doing that.
