Sweeney Tomb and Punch Bowl

SweeneyTomb400.jpg
Michael Sweeney (1809-75) was a leading citizen of the mid-1800s in Wheeling. In 1831 he and his brother established a glass making factory that shipped glassware all across the US. He had made a huge (5 ft tall) glass vase which was originally mounted within his tomb monument (as shown here) in Greenwood Cemetery, but after 74 years the vase was moved to the Oglebay Museum. The vase is known as the Sweeney Punch Bowl. Photo from Maureen Zambito.
