75 12th St - Russell House

75 12th Street: Charles Wells Russell House (on National Register of Historic Places)
Built 1848: Greek Revival style. Russell was a lawyer who argued the Wheeling Suspension Bridge case in the Supreme Court, At the outbreak of the Civil War he left to join the Confederate side. The house was used as the headquarters of the Army of West Virginia at the beginning of the Civil War under the command of General John C. Fremont (who was a great explorer, a founder of the Republican Party (and its first presidential candidate in 1856) and terrible general). Much more information here.
