When we bought it our house was said to be the oldest in Wheeling, but is it, and what are the ages of other homes, factories, statues, bridges, etc? Here is the beginning of a chronologic listing of structures still standing - see [/Demolished Demolished] for lost treasures. I do not know which of the structures that were still in existence in 1943 when Milton's book was published still exist - please let me know of ones that should be shifted to the demolished list. 1700-1800

1769: Ebenezer Zane's log cabin/blockhouse at what became 22-23 Alley 7 (between 10th and 11th streets between Main and Market). First building in Wheeling.

1850: Isaac Irwin House - 201 North [/Front%20Street Front Street], Wheeling Island; maybe 1853: This house was built for Isaac Irwin on Wheeling Island about 1853 shortly after the Wheeling Suspension Bridge opened up the island for development. The Brues family was long associated with Wheeling and lived in this classic Greek Revival style house for nearly one hundred years. It is noted for the unusual and graceful "hanging" staircase which has no visible means of support.
